For a number of years I have been inspired by the book "Grandma's Best Full-Size Quilt Blocks - Pieces of the Past for Today's Quilter" by Better Homes and Gardens. I first saw the book in my mother-in-laws extensive quilt book collection and dropped hints like bricks to my DH for a copy. Lo and behold he got it for me, probably as a Christmas gift :)
On occasion I have made a few of the blocks. Recently I decided it was time to try making them all, which will take me a while because most of the blocks do not have patterns (see my side-bar). Having said that I have been able to find patterns for the more complex ones (for me anything that involves lots of triangles and curves.)
The plan is to make wall-hangings and the occasional sampler quilt.
The main block on this scrumptious wall hanging is called "Ohio Rose" and it's finish is an experiment. I am learning how to do three dimensional applique :) This is proving to be a whoooole lot of fun.
I totally loved making this project. It would look fabulous in my daughter's bedroom but I have very reluctantly parted with it already because it is a gift for someone else. Mmmmm, maybe I should make another one.
There is another more interesting part to this story but I cann't reveal it at the moment.
Any hoo dear people. Thanks for visiting, go grab a chair, a beverage of your choice, (maybe some pic-nic supplies) and click on Amy's parkcitygirl link in the sidebar. Then go do some fun blog hopping. You will not be disappointed.

It's so pretty how the flower stands off of the block. Can't wait to see the whole quilt.
That will be a lovely wallhanging and quilt....I am glad that you decided to do it.

Hi Carol
What a beautiful quuilt. Ilokve the three dimensional flowers and the yo yo centers. SOmeone is going to be very lucky to get it!
Happy quilting, Rhondi
I love the 3-dimensional aspect - and your colour choice!
Love the background fabric. I have a little piece of that in my stash. The pink and red are great (my favorites) and the dimensionality and setting are special touches.
Thanks for posting it!

It is beautiful!
Thank you ladies. Pleased you like it. I'm looking forward to trying out some other variations.
Very cool technique of making the flower stand off the block...I really think it is very pretty.
I love it and have never seen this book or design. Thanks for sharing the wonderful quilt.
I love this flower. So pretty...good luck finishing the blocks in the book.
Isn't this festival fun?
A very very pretty flower!
so fun! thanks for showing us!
Interesting dimensional quilt. Pretty colors. So, you got the Julia Child thing going, eh? Working your way through a quilt book like she did with cooking. Sounds great!
I'm a fan of 3-D quilts and yours is quite lovely. The center yo-yo is a nice accent. Great idea to work your way through Grandma's Block book.
I find it shocking that the book doesn't include patterns for all the blocks, but must be more of a 'see' than 'do' book. Sounds like you've got a fun project started, and a great start to it with this!
Wow... the 3d is fabulous
I love it. It's beautiful.
Hints like bricks, I need to target some of mine in like that.

Very pretty - I also love that particular book & have made a few things from it. It is a book you keep going back to, isn't it? I found a very gently used copy on eBay a while back.
It looks just beautiful! I need the rest of the story...now. ;)
That's so pretty and the complete quilt will be lovely.
Thank you for your wonderful comments. I will respond to each of you individually once I've recovered from my migraine :)
A note about the designs in the book. They do come with full page finished patterns that all need to be adapted to use with fabric i.e. seam allowances added. Some of the more complex ones need to be completely redrawn so they can be used for paper piecing.
Very cute! Love the 3-d aspect!
Wow. Three dimensional applique. Another technique to learn. Looks great. Thanks for sharing.
